![]() ![]() There is no rubbing or interference from the suspension by running it this way. Our Subaru WRX/STI surge tank kit hoses run up and over the rear subframe and into the tank. Here is a photo from under the car showing the fuel tank side of the plumping. Here you see the plumping to the Walboro 400 fuel pump. The hoses on the left side route to the fuel pump. From this angle, you can see the wiring leading up the rear of the car to a power source. Two hoses enter the rear from the tank (right side leads). It made the most sense when taking into consideration the wiring for both the power and the plumbing for the cars gas tank. We are in the final stages of R&D on a complete kit which will include this Radium Surge Tank along with all of the necessary fittings, hoses and mounting brackets for a pain free installation! Enough of the technical information, here are the pictures! We mounted this Surge Tank horizontally in the trunks spare tire recession. If you're contemplating a WRX / STI surge tank stay tuned. A sudden lean mixture condition at high speeds could result in serious engine damage, leaving your high performance rally machine nothing but a glorified yard-ornament. ![]() This is particularly dangerous with a turbocharged engine like the one in the Subaru WRX. In that moment, the injectors would be getting no fuel and the engine would cut out. EFI car pump runs at very high pressure and the fuel is circulated to the fuel rail and back very rapidly, and if the pickup becomes uncovered momentarily, the pump could draw in air and purge all of the fuel from the entire system. The purpose of a fuel surge tank is to prevent your Subie from fuel system starvation when running at a low fuel level, under hard cornering, or drag racing. Below are a few photo's highlighting the installation process. You'll need some wiring skill, but otherwise it's a simple design and the install is as simple as running a few fuel lines and drilling a few holes for the optional mounting bracket. ![]() It is a relative straight forward install, and was done in a short amount of time. Test for leaks before installing.Recently we performed a Radium Engineering fuel surge tank installation on a 2005 Subaru STI at our Minnesota based performance shop. Mild steel exhaust tubing also works well. This tank is made from 3 inch, 6061 T6 tubing. This tank has 3 lower fittings for twin pumps plus a drain fitting. Usually 1/8 NPT or 1/4 NPT fittings are used but AN type fittings can also be used depending on your plumbing preferences. Threaded bosses are welded to the top and bottom caps or sides as in the example below. A long tank allows any trapped air to rise to the top so it does not enter the high pressure pump. The tubing is usually 2.5 or 3 inch diameter and. 5 to 1 liter in capacity, made from either steel or aluminum tubing. The general ports are for the following: feed from main fuel tanks 'lift' pump, return fuel back to main fuel tank, and fuel returning from the fuel pressure regulator. There are 4 ports 3 general -16 (-❨AN ORB) threaded ports and 1 fuel pump pickup port. Usually only one fitting is used on the bottom of the tank for feeding the high pressure pump. PLUMBING It is recommended that fuel entering the surge tank is filtered. Most tanks will have three fittings on the top, one for feed from the low pressure pump, one for fuel returned through the fuel pressure regulator and one for the return back to the main fuel tank. The schematic below shows a common setup: From here, if the surge tank is full, fuel is returned back to the main fuel tank. Fuel not used by the engine is returned from the rail, through the fuel pressure regulator, to the top of the surge tank. of 6 Model Number 60701 Fuel Surge Tank System Operating and Installation Instructions. The fuel gravity feeds into this pump and goes to the fuel rail. Fuel Surge Tank System (4) -908 O-rings 11001 1, No Rev. A high pressure EFI pump will be mounted below the surge tank. Often the stock electric pump can be used. Fuel is piped to it by either a stock engine driven mechanical pump or a low pressure electric pump. Usually the tank is mounted in the engine compartment. ![]() The surge tank stores a small amount of fuel for the high pressure pump to pick up if flow from the main tank is interrupted for any reason. This is also useful on many stock EFI cars which have poorly baffled tanks. To convert some carbureted vehicles to EFI, we recommend fitting a fuel surge tank to avoid fuel feed problems, especially during hard cornering. ![]()
